A-Z Maps has been chosen as the official mapping partner to produce maps for the National Trails of England and Wales. There are 16 long distance paths that have been designated as official National Trails, covering some of the most stunning parts of the country. The official National Trail maps will be produced using the iconic OS 1:25,000 mapping data, familiar with those who have used the OS Explorer maps.
A-Z Adventure Series
We’ve been working with OS for many years and the A-Z Adventure Series has been one of the successes of this partnership. The Adventure Series contains the detailed OS mapping, so loved by walkers and outdoor enthusiasts, in a convenient book format with an index to places of interest, towns, villages and features.
As the range has evolved, popular titles have been produced to cover many long distance walking routes in a single publication.
National Trails
There are 15 complete National Trails which vary in length from 79 to 630 miles. The 16th trail, the England Coast Path, will be over 2,000 miles long when complete.
The clearly marked routes mean that it is easy to walk small sections of the trail, allowing a welcome refreshment stop at a cafe or pub. Whether you are a serious hiker aiming to complete a whole National Trail or you simply want a blast of fresh air on a well maintained route, there is something for everyone.
The partnership between National Trails and A-Z came about when the latter were approached by the North Downs Way management team. They needed to provide mapping to their team of dedicated wardens to help maintain the trail and the local Adventure Series title met their requirement perfectly. This lead to discussions with Walk Unlimited, the organisation responsible for promoting the National Trails and A-Z were soon awarded the rights to become their official mapping partner.
Anne Clark, Managing Director of Walk Unlimited, said the A-Z Adventure Series was chosen for the official National Trail titles because “they clearly mark the route on OS mapping, in a single book, which also has lots of useful up to date information via QR codes such as trail updates, travel, and tourist information services”.
England Coast Path
These are exciting times for the National Trails as the England Coast Path starts to open up. Some sections of the path have already opened in Northumberland, Kent, Norfolk and Dorset with the remainder scheduled to be fully open in 2020. This path will guarantee walkers access to some of the most beautiful stretches of the coastline as open access to the land between the coast and footpath becomes a legal right.
The first in a series of Official England Coast Path Maps for the section between Minehead and Brean Down in Somerset has been produced by A-Z Maps.
